Originally used as an alternative to plywood, metal has been a popular roofing material for over a hundred years. Thanks to its high strength and low weight, it is still a common component in the structural designs of my buildings today.
At Jade Aden, we have over 25 years’ experience working with metal roof decking. We have completed hundreds of construction projects and continue to offer our services and expertise across the south of England.
In this post, we go over the various properties of metal roof decking, how to install it, and the benefits of choosing it for your new build.
What is Metal Roof Decking?
Metal roof decking is a corrugated metal panel used to roof a building. Commonly used in commercial and multi-story buildings like warehouses, it provides a strong foundation for the installation of cladding, concrete, insulation, and waterproof membranes.
It’s often used for:
- Steel canopies
- Mezzanine floors
- Roof support systems
Metal decking is usually made of steel and can come in a variety of textures and styles. During manufacturing, a fine powder can be applied to change its colour. This improves its aesthetics while helping protect it from corrosion.
Types of Metal Roof Decking
Metal decking comes in a variety of profiles and gauges.
The most commonly used type is Type B, which is 1 ½” in depth. B Decking has a good balance of strength, flexibility, and cost-efficiency, making it a versatile roofing material for many buildings.
Other popular types are Type N-24 and Type N3-32, which are thicker at 3” in depth. These are well suited for structures with long spanning components, like gymnasiums.
Deep decks (those with a depth between 4 ½” and 7 ½”) are less common, but can be used for speciality applications.
How is Metal Roof Decking Installed?
Before metal roof decking can be installed, there needs to be steel framing (consisting of beams or joists) built to support it. The level underneath the roof must also be fully completed.
After the support structure is in place, it can be filled with insulation and covered with waterproofing membranes. Spray foam insulation is commonly used for metal roofing due to it being self-adhering and easy to work with, but fibreglass batts and rigid board insulation can also be used.
Once the insulation process is completed, the metal roofing can be laid and fastened to the structure using screws, plug welding, or shots and pins. The side laps of each sheet are then fastened together.
What are the Advantages of Metal Roof Decking
Metal roof decking comes with numerous advantages, making it a versatile and cost-efficient roofing material for many types of building.
Lightweight
Metal decking is a very lightweight material, meaning the weight and size of the steel frame structure can be lessened.
Not only will this make installation easier for workers, but it also means the structure needs to support less weight and its foundations can be smaller.
Because digging foundations is often the most time-consuming and material-intensive part of construction, having smaller foundations will save you a significant amount of money.
High Strength
Despite its low weight, metal is an exceptionally strong roofing material. This means it can handle a high weight load over a long period of time.
Its strength also makes it less likely to become damaged or break, reducing the need for expensive repairs or maintenance.
Easy to Install
Metal decking is easy to handle both on and off site. It can be pre-cut before it reaches the site, making it less disruptive to the rest of the construction process.
Installation is also very easy, and does not require you to pay out for the costs that come with materials that require more expertise and preparation.
