WHAT IS BRISE SOLEIL?
Brise soleil are architectural elements, usually applied to buildings facades, that have the primary objective of shutting out direct or excessive sunlight. These features can be horizontal or vertical, and typically take the form of a perforated screen or louvres.
HOW DOES BRISE SOLEIL WORK?
Brise soleil uses a series of horizontal or vertical blades to control the amount of sunlight and solar heat that enters a building. A brise soleil system can be really beneficial for buildings that get a lot of sunlight, as it can help to prevent glare and reduce overheating. The blades allow low-level sun to enter the building in the mornings, evenings and during winter, but cut out direct summer sun. Brise soleil systems come in different configurations, with the blades arranged vertically or horizontally like shelves.
As well as reducing the amount of high angle sun in the summer, brise soleil can allow low angle sun to filter through in the winter. This can provide some passive solar heating. For buildings where controlling the interior temperature is a challenge, brise soleil can provide a solution. By reducing the ‘greenhouse effect’ (where too much solar radiation results in over-heating), brise soleil can also cut down on the need for energy-intensive (and potentially expensive) cooling measures such as air conditioning.
WHY USE BRISE SOLEIL?
On top of reducing energy costs by offering improved temperature regulation and protection from the sun, brise soleil is quite appealing to look at. As well as being practical, it can become a distinctive design feature in its own right.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE BEST FOR BRISE SOLEIL?
There are many different materials that can be used for brise soleil. Through our initial consultation process, we will work closely with you to best determine what material we should use for your building. This includes discussing various different factors such as the design and functionality of your building and your budget.
Typically, brise soleil cladding is constructed out of stainless steel, galvanised steel, aluminium, timber and perforated mesh.
BRISE SOLEIL FAQS
DOES BRISE SOLEIL WORK?
For brise soleil to effectively manage solar radiation, they are positioned above or across windows or glazed building facades to directly cut out the sun. They can be raised up to an angle of 62 degrees in the UK.
WHICH BUILDINGS ARE SUITABLE FOR BRISE SOLEIL?
The effectiveness of brise soleil depends largely on the elevation and orientation of a building. Because the sun reaches its highest point in the south, brise soleil systems are most effective on south-facing elevations. In situations where horizontal brise soleil blades will not work as well (for example on east or west elevations where the angle of the sun is lower and sunlight will pass underneath), vertical blades may be more effective.
WHAT ARE THE COST SAVINGS ASSOCIATED WITH BRISE SOLEIL?
Brise soleil can provide a long-term saving in running costs when compared with other facade screening or cladding systems.
A building equipped with brise soleil will be less severely affected by the summer heat whilst retaining precious warmth and sunlight during the colder seasons. This leads to money saved on air conditioning and heating costs, thereby protecting energy reserves, as well as reducing your carbon footprint.
